Meet Govind Jaiswal, the son of a rickshaw puller in Varanasi who defied poverty, ridicule, and societal limits to crack one of India’s most prestigious exams – the UPSC Civil Services – and become an IAS officer.
Humble Beginnings in Varanasi
Govind grew up in a small rented room in the heart of Varanasi. His father ran a small cycle-rickshaw business. With barely enough money to eat two meals a day, education seemed a luxury. But his father, despite being illiterate, dreamt of seeing his son become an officer.
Govind walked miles to school, studied under candlelight during power cuts, and often read his books in silence while others laughed at his dream.
Education Fueled by Determination
Govind studied hard and completed his schooling in government schools. He was a meritorious student and managed to pursue his graduation from a local college. His hunger for knowledge and desire to change his family’s fate never faded.
When he shared his ambition of becoming an IAS officer, many mocked him saying, “A rickshaw puller's son dreaming of IAS?” But Govind had learned early – silence was the best answer to doubt.
The Journey to UPSC
After graduation, Govind moved to Delhi for IAS preparation. He survived on minimum resources – rented a tiny room in Mukherjee Nagar and studied 14–16 hours a day. No coaching, no luxuries, just a steel will.
He didn’t allow financial constraints to become mental barriers. He used library resources, borrowed books and believed that his mind was his most powerful tool.
The Day Dreams Turned Real
In 2006, Govind Jaiswal cracked the UPSC Civil Services Exam and secured an All India Rank of 48 in his very first attempt.
His father's tears of joy, the loud cheers from neighbors and the silent pride in his own eyes became the true reward for his struggles.
